If you’re in the mood to both laugh and cry this weekend, then go ahead and purchase a ticket to My Dead Friend Zoe, a new bittersweet comedy coming to theaters.
Directed by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes in his feature film debut, with a script co-written by Hausmann-Stokes and A. J. Bermudez, My Dead Friend Zoe first premiered at last years South by Southwest Film Festival. Sonequa Martin-Green stars as a U.S. veteran named Merit who witnessed her friend Zoe (played by Natalie Morales) die while they were deployed in Afghanistan. Back home, Merit is, quite literally, haunted by Zoe’s death. As in, Zoe’s ghost is following her. And she won’t shut up.
Also starring Gloria Reuben, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Morgan Freeman, and Ed Harris, My Dead Friend Zoe received positive review from critics at SXSW. Now, finally, the movie is being released in theaters.
