EXCLUSIVE: Italian director Mario Martone’s new film Trick (Scherzetto) has begun principal photography in the director’s home city of Naples and unveiled a first image of its star Toni Servillo in the role of a famous illustrator.

The screenplay, co-written by Martone with Ippolita di Majo, is based on the novel of the same name by Domenico Starnone, published by Einaudi.

Set almost entirely within the confines of an apartment and its balcony, the story unfolds over the course of a few days and centers on an unexpected duel between a grandfather and his grandson.

In his seventh collaboration with Martone, Servillo plays Daniele Mallarico, a celebrated illustrator who has lived and worked in near solitude for years. He stars alongside Lorenzo Perrotta, who plays his grandson Mario, a very young, fiercely imaginative and unruly child.
