It seems like microplastics are being found everywhere. They’re in our air, water, popular household items, our food and even our bodies. Although more research is needed, a 2024 rapid systematic review found that microplastics may harm humans’ respiratory, reproductive and digestive health, and these microscopic plastic particles could even be linked to colon cancer. A 2026 study showed that microplastics have even been traced to the placenta in pregnant people and needs to be further studied on its impact in pregnancy outcomes and fetal development.
Microplastics are also commonly found in our everyday kitchen products. Below I found four potential microplastic sources hiding in my kitchen and microplastic-free alternatives to replace them with. If you have these in your home, give these swaps a try.
