The ‘Project Hail Mary’ Hype Revealed That ‘Interstellar’ Has Ascended to Classic Status

As Project Hail Mary blew through worldwide box office expectations when it opened in movie theaters last weekend, reactions and reviews evoked a promising series of sci-fi titles. There’s The Martian, of course, the previous space-set film adapted from a novel by Andy Weir, where Matt Damon, rather than Ryan Gosling, must science his way out of a sticky situation. Perhaps less expected but not shocking if you’ve seen the movie’s trailers is E.T., given that Dr. Grace (Gosling) befriends an alien creature during his far-flung mission to save the world. Perhaps the most surprising title to repeatedly surface, however, is Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film Interstellar, name-checked as a sci-fi classic the new film from Chris Miller and Phil Lord is following.
