As Project Hail Mary blew through worldwide box office expectations when it opened in movie theaters last weekend, reactions and reviews evoked a promising series of sci-fi titles. There’s The Martian, of course, the previous space-set film adapted from a novel by Andy Weir, where Matt Damon, rather than Ryan Gosling, must science his way out of a sticky situation. Perhaps less expected but not shocking if you’ve seen the movie’s trailers is E.T., given that Dr. Grace (Gosling) befriends an alien creature during his far-flung mission to save the world. Perhaps the most surprising title to repeatedly surface, however, is Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film Interstellar, name-checked as a sci-fi classic the new film from Chris Miller and Phil Lord is following. For one thing: Is Interstellar considered a classic now? And if it is, did Lord and Miller live up to it?
