Sayuri Herrera is Mexico City’s first prosecutor that specializes in investigating cases of femicide, or basically women who were murdered because of their gender. The three part docuseries The Prosecutor (original title: La fiscal) follows her as she and her team look into cases that come into their office.
Opening Shot: Mountains of old paper files in storage at Mexico City’s public prosecutor’s office. “In 2020, 3,748 women were murdered in Mexico. Out of those, 2,801 were intentional homicides, and 947 were femicides,” says the voices of Sayuri Herrera.
The Gist: As the filmmakers talk to the police investigators that work in Sayuri Herrera’s office, we find out that, when Herrera took office in 2022, there used to be a few femicide cases called into the office per day. Now they get dozens of leads and tips they have to look into every day.
