Wildlife photographers expect surprises in the field—but nothing could have prepared one seasoned professional for the scene that greeted him after a brief nap beneath a tree in East Africa. When he awoke, a cheetah was sleeping soundly right against him.
An Unimaginable Encounter
After hours of patiently waiting and watching for animals, the photographer had drifted off in the shade. Upon waking, he discovered a cheetah nestled by his side, also fast asleep. The animal, apparently exhausted, had sought a quiet spot to rest. Drawn perhaps by the shade or by the calm, unmoving presence of the photographer, the cheetah had simply settled in next to him.
“I felt warmth against me and when I opened my eyes, I saw this cheetah snuggled up beside me. At first, I thought I was dreaming,” the photographer said.
