‘The Drama’ with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson is A24’s Latest Attempt to Remake (or Destroy?) the Rom-Com

In another era, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson might have made a beautiful rom-com together. Or maybe not beautiful, but certainly glossy and containing beauty: Her guarded, piercing eyes and luminous curls; his chiseled face that makes him look like an impossibly handsome Easter Island statue. Though he’s a decade her senior, they have shared experience in YA swooning – he as the sparkly vampire from Twilight, she as Spider-Man’s deadpan sweetheart – and it’s only natural to pair these name-brand stars in a romance allowing them both to crack self-effacing smiles. Perhaps the broadest joke of The Drama, their new film together, is that they’ve done this movie instead. Naturally, it’s for A24, the indie studio that has seemingly fixated on deconstructing romance as closely as they once focused on revitalizing horror – maybe because the two genres can sometimes land closer together than anyone expects.
