
AMC Networks is changing its name to AMC Global Media, a rebranding in keeping with changes in the broader media landscape and within the company.
The company announced the shift Wednesday in an SEC filing.
Linear cable television is the company’s main heritage, but streaming has become a key area of strategic focus. Originally known as Rainbow Media, it spun off from Cablevision, a major pay-TV provider founded by Charles Dolan in 1973. The Dolan family remains a force in sports and live events, operating MSG Entertainment, MSG Sports and Sphere Entertainment along with maintaining control of AMC Global Media.
While cable networks AMC, IFC and BBC America remain in the company’s portfolio, streaming now accounts for the majority of its U.S. revenue as cord-cutting keeps eroding linear viewing and advertising.
