‘#SkyKing’ Director Explains Why Richard Russell’s Wife Didn’t Participate in Documentary

Viewers won’t be able to tear their eyes away from #SKYKING, the new Hulu documentary about Richard “Beebo” Russell, an airport ground crew worker who stole a commercial jet in 2018.

Director Patricia E. Gillespie crafts a breathtaking narrative, beginning with Russell—an employee at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport—using his badge to sneak past security, hop onto a De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft, and perform an unauthorized take-off completely solo, despite his lack of pilot experience.

From there, Gillespie backtracks, interviewing Russell’s mom, siblings, aunt, and co-workers, who paint a picture of a goofy, lovable man who was hiding a deep well of pain. But one voice is noticeably missing from the documentary: Russell’s wife of six years, Hannah.
