Version Control: Which Version of ‘The Mummy’ Should You Unwrap?

Unlike his Universal Monsters colleagues Count Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy doesn’t have a specific literary classic lending him (or her) instant legitimacy. It’s just a loosely affiliated bunch of supernatural mumbo-jumbo related to Egyptian history and legend about the process of a mummified figure rising from the dead to menace the living. But from those humble rags have come great riches. The original Universal series of Mummy movies has more entries than the Wolf Man or the Creature from the Black Lagoon; and while Dracula and Frankenstein stories may have automatic pedigree, neither of them have toplined a contemporary blockbuster series. No wonder Warner Bros. has decided to get in on the action with the latest iteration of The Mummy haunting movie theaters imminently.
