Dean Tavoularis, the production designer whose collaborations with director Francis Ford Coppola produced the iconic looks and imagery of such seminal films as the Godfather movies, Apocalypse Now and The Conversation, died of natural causes in Paris on Wednesday, April 22. He was 93.
His death was reported by writer and film critic Jordan Mintzer of Deadline’s sister publication The Hollywood Reporter. Mintzer co-authored the 2022 book Conversations With Dean Tavoularis.
Tavoularis won the Oscar for his art direction-set decoration of 1974’s The Godfather: Part II, and was nominated for the Coppola-directed Apocalypse Now (1979), Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988), The Godfather: Part III (1990) as well as William Friedkin‘s The Brink’s Job (1978).
