EXCLUSIVE: Vertical has taken North American rights to the Sundance Film Festival premiere, The Weight, starring 5x Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke and Oscar winner Russell Crowe. A Sept. 18 wide theatrical release is planned.
The directorial debut of Padraic McKinley was bound to nab a buyer, critics noticing the movie’s commercial potential; the pic landing a 94% fresh critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
When Samuel (Hawke) is torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal prison, Warden Clancy (Crowe) offers a high-stakes proposition: smuggle gold out of a remote mine with a dangerous crew of prisoners and he’ll win his freedom. But as the group journeys into the unforgiving wilderness, the real threat isn’t the terrain – it’s the betrayal and violence festering within their ranks.
