The anime, which premiered in 1999, is based on a manga of the same name by Japanese Eiichiro Oda. The series follows Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates as they seek the legendary “One Piece” treasure to become King of Pirates. One of the longest running anime series with 21 seasons and over 1,000 episodes, it’s become a cultural phenomenon in Japan, with 15 animated films and 13 television specials in its home country.
The U.S. has also cashed in on the swashbuckling hype – Netflix released a highly anticipated live-action adaptation of One Piece in 2023, starring Iñaki Godoy as Luffy. Season 2 of the live-action series premiered on March 10, while Season 22 of the animated version premieres on April 5.
