American cinephiles everywhere just added a new movie to their watch list: I’m Still Here, the Brazilian drama that nabbed a surprise bid for Best Picture in the 2025 Oscar nominations this morning. But before you feel bad that you haven’t yet seen—or maybe haven’t even heard about—this Best Picture nominee, you should know that the movie doesn’t even open wide in the U.S. for three more weeks. Directed by Walter Salles, with a screenplay written by Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega, I’m Still Here depicts the true story of Eunice Pavia, a Brazilian lawyer and activist whose husband, Rubens Paiva, was disappeared after defying the Brazilian military dictatorship in the 1960s. The film was adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 memoir that he wrote about his mother.
