In the wake of the death of Pope Francis, who died at age 88 on Monday morning, everybody wants to watch the Conclave movie.
That makes sense, given that Edward Berger’s Oscar-winning 2024 film is quite literally a dramatization of the process that takes place after a pope dies: the cardinals gather in Vatican City to vote on the next pope. Conclave—a mystery-thriller based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Robert Harris––jazzes up this real-life process with some fictional scandals that are uncovered by an ethical Cardinal (played by Ralph Fienes) who discovers his colleagues and papal hopefuls are hiding some dark secrets. It’s hard to say how accurate the Conclave movie is, but it’s certainly an interesting speculation on what might be going down in Vatican City right now.
