Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed sci-fi epic, Megalopolis, is finally coming to theaters this weekend. It’s been a long journey for this film, which parallels the fall of the Roman Empire to the imagined fall of the U.S empire. Coppola has been trying to get the film made since 1989, but, thanks to financial obstacles, never got it off the ground—until now.
The sprawling Megalopolis cast includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D. B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman. The movie premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it polarized critics—though not quite as much as the trailer that was scrapped for fabricating pull quotes from critics would have you believe.
