Oakland, California was pretty freaky in the year 1987, and now moviegoers can experience that for themselves with Freaky Tales, the new action comedy coming to theaters this weekend.
Written and directed by filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Freaky Tales is an anthology film that follows four different, interconnected tales that all take place during real historical events in 1987 in Oakland. There’s the three teenage punks (Ji-young Yoo, Marteen, and Jack Champion) who catch an Operation Ivy show at an iconic Oakland venue. There’s a rap battle between a hip-hop legend (played by MC Symba) and a pair of minimum wageworkers (Normani and Dominique Thorne). There’s a ruthless debt collector (Pedro Pascal) trying to change his ways. And there’s a man (played by former NBA star Sleepy Floyd) seeking revenge for a break-in.
