Is ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ Streaming on Netflix or HBO Max?

A new Lord of the Rings movie in 2024? It’s more likely than you think.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim opens in movie theaters in the U.S. this weekend, once again bringing the fantasy world created by author J.R.R. Tolkien to the big screen. But this time around, it’s an anime prequel!

Set 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s 2001 adaptation of The Fellowship of the Ring, this animated film tells the story of Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Succession star Brian Cox), the quick-tempered king of Rohan, and his fiery daughter, Héra (voiced by Gaia Wise).

Directed by Japanese filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, with a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews and Phoebe Gittins & Arty Papageorgiou, The War of the Rohirrim is said to exist mostly to prevent Warner Bros. from losing the license on the Lord of the Rings franchise.
