‘La Máquina’ Review: Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna Deliver Their Trademark Chemistry in Hulu’s Twisty, Melodramatic Boxing Thriller

With Apple TV+’s Pachinko and HBO’s My Brilliant Friend reigning as TV’s best current scripted shows, this has already been a big fall for non-English originals. 

La Máquina, dubbed Hulu’s first Spanish language original series, doesn’t quite hit those creative heights. But the genre-defying underdog sports conspiracy/melodramatic comic thriller could find a bigger audience with its mostly zippy pace and array of reasonably unexpected twists — as well as its always-welcome reunion of longtime friends, collaborators and production partners Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, whose star wattage easily carries this six-part limited series.
