EXCLUSIVE: Okay, so it probably won’t be the next Barbenheimer. Magnolia has set up a July 31 latex collision for its wide theatrical release I Want Your Sex, the Gregg Araki-directed Sundance sensation that stars Olivia Wilde as an artist/provocateur who indoctrinates into the world of sexual kink a young muse (Cooper Hoffman). Magnolia bought it after its Park City premiere in a 7-figure deal.
That film has a wide open berth that weekend, except for another release whose characters are laced in latex wear. That would be Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with Tom Holland and Zendaya reprising.
Magnolia is looking for the counterprogramming seam here obviously, though perhaps each film will stands its ground as a date movie, though maybe the Magnolia pic works better as a second date.
