British TV still gets tagged as a little soft, polite, or cozy, which, sure, sometimes that reputation makes sense. But then there’s “Luther,” which pretty much kicks that idea through a window. Tara and I have been watching this show since the beginning, and there’s nothing gentle about it. This is a grimy, stylish, scary, morally messy thriller TV built around Idris Elba giving one of the great detective-show performances of all time. If you just signed up for BritBox and want the first thriller that proves British crime TV can hit hard, this is the one I’d start with.
