Max Follows Netflix’s Lead, Debuts “Extra Member Add-On” In Bid To Curb Password Sharing

Warner Bros. Discovery has followed Netflix‘s lead and debuted an “extra member add-on” feature on its flagship streaming service Max.

The initiative is designed to stem the effects of password sharing and generate incremental revenue.

The new option, which costs $7.99 a month, also lets a subscriber transfer an adult profile to the extra member account. Only one add-on is allowed per account. The extra member can stream from one profile on one device at a time and get all benefits included in the primary account holder’s base plan.

WBD had signaled last year it would begin to restrict password sharing in the first part of 2025. Speaking at a Wells Fargo conference last December, JB Perrette, WBD’s CEO of Global Streaming and Games, said certain Max subscribers would begin getting “some very early, gentle messaging” about password sharing by the end of 2024.
