Shows that tend to combine folklore with modern-day action, like the Taiwanese series Agent From Above on Netflix, combine the darker elements of the traditional mythology with a sense of humor. But sometimes that sense of humor is well-integrated, and sometimes it comes out of nowhere.
Opening Shot: An animation explaining how gods and demons came to use spiritual channeling to interface with the Human Realm. Very few humans have been able to channel the gods and demons. Those that do are called “Agents From Above.”
The Gist: A young woman named Yeh Tzu aka “Leafy” (Buffy Chen) walks through a dark, crowded building in a sketch Taipei neighborhood to find Han Chieh (Kai Ko), who fights spirits on behalf of the Third Crown Prince (Bo-Chieh Wang). She has a red envelope, left by a female spirit that she thinks enchanted her father to cheat on her mother.
