Steven Kostanski’s Deathstalker remake (now streaming on Shudder) is 35 percent snot. It’s likely the gloopiest, goriest movie to splatter across your screen in years. If beheadings were currency, Deathstalker would be Elon Musk. If red corn syrup was oil, Deathstalker would be Daniel Plainview. You get the picture. The original 1983 Deathstalker was a Roger Corman-produced blatant cash-in ripoff of Conan the Barbarian that scraped up a cult following thanks to cable TV reruns and the early days of VHS rentals, and spawned a handful of dreadful sequels. This new one comes from the guy who directed The Void and Psycho Goreman, was produced by Slash — yes, THAT Slash — stars the KMart Jon Hamm (sorry, Daniel Bernhardt), features oodles of cheesy-rubbery practical effects and is really terrifically impressively stupid.
