Stream It Or Skip It: ‘It’s Dorothy!’ on Peacock, a Highly Entertaining Deep-Dive Documentary About the Beloved Hero of ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Director Jeffrey McHale crams a whole lotta stuff into It’s Dorothy! (now streaming on Peacock). This deep-dive documentary about the pop-cultural cache of The Wizard of Oz’s iconic protagonist interviews Dorothy actors and a cross-section of her greatest admirers, from John Waters to Margaret Cho to Lena Waithe – and it’s also sort of a secret Judy Garland bio. The character’s century-and-a-quarter of unflagging relevance is a bit too much to cover for a 97-minute documentary, but the alternatives are either a limited series or one of those lunatic five-hour jobs that are primarily the domain of superfans making lots of hay with GoFundMe dough. So I think McHale’s entertaining and informative grazing will work for now. 

The Gist: Warning: It’s Dorothy! is bold enough to address the critical drubbing the Diana Ross-led The Wiz received, to ask dubya-tee-eff about Return to Oz and to go deeper into The Muppets’
