Sydney Sweeney plays an ex-con in a snug tank top in The Housemaid (now streaming on Starz, in addition to VOD platforms like Amazon Prime Video), but whether the movie lives up to the pulpy potential of that character concept is the question. The Anyone But You and Euphoria star works alongside the underrated Amanda Seyfried and It Ends With Us hunk Brandon Sklenar for this Paul Feig-directed (A Simple Favor, Bridesmaids) adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling airport-gift-shop novel – and perhaps to no one’s surprise, the movie was a sizable hit, grossing more than $300 million worldwide, ending Sweeney’s two-year skid that included shrugworthy stuff like Eden, Americana and Christy. Which has us wondering if Sweeney’s an easier sell for juicy trash like The Housemaid than anything you might actually take seriously.
