Thrash (now on Netflix) could’ve been titled Sharkicane, but it’s clear that B-movie director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Violent Night) wants to differentiate his flick from less-serious fare. Not that this disaster/shark attack hybrid thriller is particularly serious, mind you, but its tongue isn’t so deep in its cheek to be lumped in with the onslaught of ultra-cheapo Syfy schlock that nearly ruined the joy of a good old-fashioned chomp-chomp/bleed-bleed timewaster. Such is the conundrum of the modern shark movie, so frequently trapped between the beautifully simple thrills of Jaws and the crap-CGI stupidity of 2-Headed Shark Attack and its ilk – is it better to go cheese-o campy, or hard-sell poker-face it for horror’s sake? Unfortunately, Wirkola doesn’t have a decent answer for that.
