A Letterboxd review lines up Vengeance (now streaming on Amazon Prime Video) in its sights and killshots it: “Juan Wick,” it reads. We could all stop right there and go on with our lives, but there’s inevitably some nuance to the comparison, and besides, I’ve got a job to do here. Also known as Revenge or, in its native Mexico, Venganza (a tough title to Google regardless), this action-thriller stars Omar Chaparro as a Special Forces captain seeking the thing in the title of the movie after his wife is gunned down. That kind of thing never happens to line cooks or dentists who just go to therapy and try to get on with their lives – at least not in movies, especially those that seek to deliver brutal fisticuffs, shootouts and smashy-crashy car chases with a fair amount of aplomb, like this one.
