Horror has always loved a throwback. There’s something extra creepy about revisiting a not-so-distant past-where the clothes are dated, the phones have cords, and the danger feels just a little more real. Lately, the 1980s have become the genre’s favorite playground, with Stranger Things leading the charge in bringing neon-lit nightmares back into style.
But while plenty of shows and movies lean into the aesthetic, few actually nail the vibe. That’s exactly why The House of the Devil stood out to me. Directed by Ti West, this indie horror gem doesn’t just nod to the ’80s-it fully lives there. From the slow-burn pacing to the gritty film grain, it’s a near-perfect homage to the era of atmospheric dread and VHS-era terror.
You can watch it totally free on Tubi (which, honestly, is one of the best places to find weird, wonderful horror right now). If you’re into suspense-driven scares with that old-school flavor, this one’s a must-watch.
