Can a silly David Spade and Theo Von buddy comedy shape the future of the movie industry? Probably not, but that’s what folks are waiting to find out, with the release of their new movie Busboys, in theaters this weekend.
Busboys is not your typical movie release. It was financed by Spade and Von, and it is foregoing any traditional studio or film distribution company. Instead, Night, a digital marketing company, is releasing the film directly to theaters.
“This is what independent film making looks like in 2026,” wrote Busboys director Jonah Feingold in a Substack newsletter last month. “It’s a new blueprint. Studios are going to be studying this playbook for years.”
SNL alum David Spade and podcast host Theo Von wrote, produced, and star in the film as two friends who decide to become waiters, believing this is one of the coolest jobs in the world.
