‘Tokyo Vice’ is the best thriller show you probably missed on HBO Max

HBO Max has a ton of prestige dramas, and usually the big ones completely dominate the conversation like “Succession” or “The Last of Us.” But every once in a while, there’s a show that has all the pieces to be one of those hits and just… doesn’t break through. That’s exactly what happened with “Tokyo Vice.” It’s a slick, cinematic crime thriller set in late ’90s Tokyo, it’s got Ken Watanabe anchoring the cast, it’s produced by Michael Mann, and critics and audiences both really liked it. And yet, a lot of people either missed it entirely or never got around to it before it quietly ended after two seasons. If you’re looking for the best under-the-radar thriller series on HBO Max, this is easily the one I’d start with.
